The Advantages And Disadvantages of living in Potong Pasir by Jared Ho

We all come from different estates. Be it Potong Pasir, Toa Payoh or Woodlands, we are bound to have one similar aspect, ups and downs. This is otherwise known as the advantages and disadvantages and I would like to talk about the advantages and disadvantages of living in Potong Pasir.

Thankfully the advantages of living in Potong Pasir trump the disadvantages. For example, there are different places of religious worship such as the Sri Siva Durga temple or the churches located within the St Andrews village. There are even a few Mosques in the neighboring estate of Toa payoh for the Muslims and even Shuang Lin temple to cater to the Taoist religious needs.

Besides places of worship, there is also a wide variety of food cuisine to cater to everybody’s preferences. A KFC fast food restaurant is located in the CC and a Macdonald’s fast food restaurant opposite it. Adjacent to the MacDonald’s is a soya bean shop called “N and B”. If you are one who loves to be spoiled for choice, there are two coffee shops located in the more prominent spots of Potong Pasir, one just opposite of the Indian Temple and another positioned towards the Potong Pasir MRT Station.

Due to its centralised location, Potong Pasir has a high accessibility rate, linking it to the North East Line and Circle line, making other popular shopping malls like NEX or Raffles Place easily accessible. People on the commute hardly have any complains as the trains are cooling and comfortable, apart from Peak Hour of course.

Potong Pasir community centre caters to virtually all of the residences needs, providing education centers for the young and old, fun activities for everyone and even a Basketball court for those who are sporty and athletic. Since there is also a Multi Purpose Hall, Marriage ceremonies can be held here. For kids between the ages of 2 to 6, there are even playgroup programs for them to learn and have fun.

Unfortunately, everything has a downside. Potong Pasir’s section of the large and vast Kallang river may be an eyesore to some since it is polluted, and there is a place to do 2.4 km run.People still feel the urge of shopping however, and there is not a single shopping mall in the area. Many of the residents are also rudely awakened by the morning traffic from the cars due to the time school starts at as the roads around Potong Pasir are very small, with only a single lane. This would therefore disrupt the many who are still sleeping.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of living in Potong Pasir

"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder"
As some might say, there are always good and bad points depending on one's personal perspective. So, what are the advantages and disadvantages people face living in Potong Pasir, Are there more advantages or disadvantages? Well, let's start with the advantages.

Potong Pasir is considered to be a happening neighborhood with many good facilities. There are many places of Worships for different religions , like the Church , the Indian Temple and also the Mosque! There is also a Community Centre that has specially organised courses planned out for the residents of Potong Pasir . The courses includes Taekwando , Archery ,Wushu ,Basic English Course ,Badminton and many more to meet their needs. The courses comes at a very reasonable price for everyone to gain and upgrade their daily skills that are not taught in school and this gives them a chance to be a head over the rest. There is also a basketball court, street-soccer court , archery range , exercise corner and a conference hall for people to meet up with each other to form great bondings even after school and to have a wonderful time. The exercise corner helps the residents to stay healthy.

There are also many convenient dining places for hungry residents to have their meals after or before their long and tiring work all within distances for their tasty food! Of course with food related issues, there is also a Wet market for the housewives to get their groceries easily every morning. Not only that, there are also 24-Hour shops like 7-11 and a Medical clinic in the vicinity. Just a stone away from the vicinity lies the MRT Station which is a good form of transportation for residents to reach their desired destination. Potong Pasir is in the North-East Line and it can reach to the central of Singapore in a short time taken. Another good form of transportation are the Buses. There are several bus stops around Potong Pasir as well. Last but not least, a fun place to study and place is the Saint Andrew's Village. It has a Kindergarten , Primary school , Secondary school and even Junior College all combined in one village together! Many of the school boys regard Potong Pasir as their second home ever since their school life started and it is all already planned out for them.

Sad to say, there are also disadvantages living in Potong Pasir, however there are more advantages than disadvantages. Even though in Potong Pasir, daily necessities are readily available, People still feel the urge of shopping however there is a lack of shopping malls in the area. Many of the residents are also loudly awakened by the honking sounds from the cars due to the traffic jams especially when school starts as the roads around Potong Pasir are very small with one lane. Unfortunately, there is also no Chinese Temple for the Buddhist believers and therefore , they have to travel somewhere else to the nearest Chinese temples for their prayers.

In our opinion , Potong Pasir is our ideal and great place to live in and we always look forward to visiting the vicinity and also enjoying the facilities around Potong Pasir. This town would certainly be remembered as our second home. Let us strive together to make Potong Pasir a even better place!

Pros 'N' Cons of Potong Pasir

Normally , people see Potong Pasir as a small place which is lacking of the newest facilities that other neighbourhood are upgrading into . The colours of the walls of the high-rise flats look like they have been around ever since ancient history times , but what lies behind this place are people and places that makes judgers think twice on calling this the oldest place around . Potong Pasir firstly lies on the Northeast Line , and somewhere off the middle . To access town , it only takes 8 minutes to Dhoby Ghaut , and it's a stop from NEX , the newest shopping centre around . The line also allows you to transfer at hotspots such as Dhoby , Serangoon and Outram , which also lies off the centre stations of the lines they can access to . If you want to access even more specific locations , there are a wide variety of buses to choose from . This makes Potong Pasir a very happening location as commuters come and go very often .

To add on to that , Potong Pasir is a place where all types of races can come together and have fun . The community centre offers many different types of courses and classes , such as Basic English Course and Taekwondo which allows the young and the old to equip themselves with the latest technology , and the newest trends . Plus , it comes at a very reasonably low price , which allows fellow neighbours who are financially constrained to have a chance of attending these classes . There is also a street soccer court and a basketball court , where the young ones have a chance to mix with the seniors for a session to sweat it out , and there's a park and exercise corner , which allows the people to keep healthy , keep fit . The food available is also convenient as there's western food , muslim food , indian food , all within walking distance from one another . There are also venues for religious activities within the vicinity , though Buddhists believers would have to take a 5 minute bus ride down to Toa Payoh to offer prayers , as that's the nearest temple .

As one thing has it's advantages , there would definitely be disadvantages . Potong Pasir tend to experience traffic jams during peak hours , especially during St Andrew's School dismissal times , because the roads are very small , and there's no space for cars to mobilise as freely as in other areas . But overall , Potong Pasir is a unique neighbourhood , because it shines for the limited yet useful facilities within it !

Advantages and Disadvantages of Potong Pasir

Left stranded in the middle of Potong Pasir, the St. Andrew's Village, where Saints are mould. Places that seem impossible to miss out. Overcrowded coffeeshops at dismissal time, which allow us to hang out and share things we never had the chance to say in school, over the sumptuous and mouth-watering dishes. Fast food restaurants like KFC and Mcdonald's were the perfect place to grab a quick bite for breakfast before going to school, or having a meal in a air-conditioned environment after a hot and tiring day, or even for studying. The variety of food in this Neighborhood is extraordinary, with many Food Centre's ranging from Indian to Western to Mixed Vegetables. Cheaply priced Food And Co. are so simple to find that a 5 minutes walk from the MRT Station leads you to the ABC shop, the few shops that sell at the cheapest prices in Singapore. But not everything is about food, there are temples, churches and even a mosque. Just a stone's throw away from the housing estates. Bringing people to know more about religious teachings, and making it convenient for people to worship and pray. At the heart of the convenience is the Potong Pasir Community Centre, providing the needs of people in means such as Taekwondo classes, Basic English Classes and many more courses which are at an affordable price. Luxurious facilities that show the quality of this well kept central of Potong Pasir. Many outdoor activities and facilities for both old and young providing Tai Chi classes, a Classic sized Basketball Court and a rowdy and entertaining but welcoming Street Soccer Court, a small but well equipped Exercise Corner with an exclusive Spider Web, uncommonly seen in other neighborhoods. Transport is also not a problem due to the massive number of Buses that pass through that lead you all through Singapore. Just a few minutes on the MRT can bring you to Dhoby Ghaut, where shopping is one of the best and also to Serangoon where the newly opened NEX shopping centre has a variety of food and entertainment to offer! But still, for those loving the hustle and bustle of a dazzling city would not enjoy staying in this quiet and safe neighborhood. Another disappointment is that a Buddhist Temple is not available within walking distance, the nearest being in Toa Payoh. But still overall, the neighborhood of Potong Pasir is top out of a thousand!!

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Potong Pasir

Many people may think differently of the advantages and disadvantages of Potong Pasir. To us, the advantages and disadvantages come in many ways.
First, we’d like to discuss about the advantages of Potong Pasir as a town. Firstly, there is a Community Centre which provides entertainment and courses for the old and young alike. It also allows people to use the facilities for their own events, although some need to be rented. There many eateries such as coffee shops that provides a variety of food that caters to the residents, and also fast-food restaurants such as McDonald’s and KFC which students often patronize and enjoy eating at. There are many places of worship for different religions such as the Indian temple, mosque and an Anglican church. Residents can buy their daily necessities from the wet market. Shops also offer their goods and services. To conclude, Potong Pasir is also a residential area that provides for its residents and also allows them to travel easily to other parts of Singapore in a short time.
With many such advantages, there also disadvantages. Firstly, there are no shopping malls or supermarkets to provide more daily necessities compared to the wet market and the different shops. Based on its location, the prices of housing here is more expensive compared to other houses in other residential areas in Singapore.

About Potong Pasir

Potong Pasir is a friendly neighborhood and a home to residents of all ages. It is a great place where residents can enjoy the facilities or do their last minute shopping whenever they need to. Though there are pros and cons of it.

Firstly, the roads are filled with numerous number of traffic lights, This means that would cause a traffic jam if too many vehicles are crossing the junction at peak hours, this would inconvenience everyone though. An example is the 4 traffic light junction just outside the Potong Pasir fast food Macdonald's. Many people would pres the traffic light and cross the road which stops the vehicles for awhile and slowly by slowly it would have a long traffic jam. This has been experienced by many Bus 142 daily passengers and trying to get home as soon as possible after their long day of work and experience a traffic jam at the junction towards Potong Pasir. Another reason is that the Council would have to use up more on the costs to build traffic lights. In our opinion, there should be a swap of zebra crossings instead. This would allow everyone to cross the road when they need to. Causing less waiting time and occurring traffic jams. Though, there are people like the elderly who needs more time to cross the road while the traffic light only allows a limited time to cross.

Potong Pasir offers food at a huge variety of choices ranging from international food such as Vegetarian, Japanese, Fast Food, Chinese, Indian and much much more. Nearby fast-food restaurants make it convenient for residents to order rather than to travel all the way to Toa Payoh just to order fast food. They have lots of food outlets like nearby hawker centers and food courts just below the blocks that the residents can enjoy their family dinner or convenient takeaways. The residents enjoy the reasonable prices of food and the quantity of food, having even other people to come all the way to Potong Pasir just to try the food here.

Next, the town council offers courses available for the residents at reasonable prices such as Pefuming Secrets, Batik Fabric Box Making, Creative DIY Japanese Nail Art, and this list just goes on and on. The council knows that the elderly or young tend to have nothing do during the holidays and therefore organised such courses to ensure that they do not get bored! Sounds interesting!

Lastly, Potong Pasir is a place which offers facilities for the young and old to use such as Basketball and Badminton Courts, Archery Area, Football Field and many playgrounds. Using the motto 'Work Hard, Play Hard', allowing studying students to enjoy their playtime after school with their friends with a game is a good way to end the day, not forgetting to do their homework.

To sum up all the Pros and Cons, regardless of the disadvantages the council will still try their best to ensure that Potong Pasir residents enjoy their neighborhood. Though, Potong Pasir is known to be close to perfection with the feedback of the residents. A loving neighborhood indeed.
